College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Computer-Based Testing (CBT)

General Information:

The College Level Examination Program is an exclusively online test that allows students to earn credit toward graduation by attaining Arkansas Tech University’s qualifying score on either the general and/or subject examinations.  A student may acquire a maximum of 30 hours of college credit though CLEP CBT from any combinations of either the 29 hours of CLEP General Examinations or 18 hours of CLEP Subject Examinations.

Mandatory Criteria For Taking CLEP:

Credit earned through CLEP CBT may satisfy general education requirements; however, to be awarded credit, students must complete, with passing grades, one regular semester of work at Arkansas Tech University.  No more than one subject examination may be taken in a particular departmental area, and students must have prior approval from the department in which they are majoring to count the hours toward graduation.

Suggested Criteria For Taking CLEP:

It is recommended that an ACT sub-score of 24 or about or an SAT sub-score of 500 or above be used as a guideline for attempting to earn credit though CLEP CBT.  The following page lists CLEP examinations that Arkansas Tech University will accept, the corresponding qualifying score required, and credit awarded.

Scores:

Students will receive their score upon completion of each CLEP CBT examination except English Composition with Essay; although English Composition with essay can be taken during any week of any month, CLEP will only grade this test once during each month, so students will have to wait four to six weeks to receive their results.

Wait Time Between Test:

A student must wait six (6) months before re-taking a CLEP exam.  Scores on tests repeated before six months will be canceled, and test fees will not be refunded.

Cost Per Test:

$55.00 (to CLEP;  Visa, Mastercard, American Express or checks/money orders payable to CLEP)

$15.00 (to ATU; cash only)

$70.00 TOTAL

*Examinees must make a separate check for each test they take!

Testing Schedule:

CLEP tests are to be scheduled only on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 a.m.  No more than two clients may be scheduled at a time.  If a client insists he or she can’t take the CLEP at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, refer him or her to Miss Pittman (968-0382).
